Best bread I have ever had with a sandwich, made fresh daily. The angus beef is top choice. Quality in sandwiches is excellent. Being from the north east, we take pride in sandwiches and heros. Stu's definitely gets my vote. Don't bother switching for a wrap, stick to a sub. Wait in line is a bit long but worth it. I'll definitely be back.

The best sub on the island!! Nobody does it better and they even make their bread is amazing.

The service was very slow. Too many other nice restaurants to choose from.

Read the reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor and since it was right across the street from the condo we decided to give 'er a try. It was warm and humid but still decided to sit outside given that the small dining area was packed and noisy. I ordered the #7, the Lairdo. I have no clue where the name comes from but it was tasty! Hot pastrami wrapping kraut and topped with provolone and some deli mustard on a home made roll. A heckuva lot like a Reuben but on a roll instead of rye. One might be concerned about the white breading getting soggy given the sauerkraut but it really didn't. Excellent job, guys! My wife and son liked their Veggie sub and Sandbar sub (ham, bacon, and provolone basically) respectively and noted the large size of their sammies. My youngest was crabbing about his but with vacation fatigue he would have whined about anything short of pizza. Relatively affordable prices given the vacay location, friendly service and large portions make this a recommended spot in my book.

I'll keep this review short. Do yourself a favor and bypass all the chain sub shops and go here. The bread is made everyday in house and it is killer! One of the best subs I've ever had!

We ate an excellent lunch here today. The subs were fantastic... especially the bread! The people working here were very friendly and wanted to make sure everything was fine with our meals. Will definitely return.

Took 30 minutes to get takeout order. Got back to room and order was wrong even after explaining twice the order. Not worth the wait or slow, inaccurate service.

Here with a party of 10 and each person got a different sandwich... Reviews are in and each one of them were delicious! The bread is homemade and the pbr was only $1.00. We highly recommend eating here!

A few years ago we were sitting outside of Stu's Surf Side waiting for our food when this frat guy walked by and yelled, "EAT AT STU'S! BEST SUBS ON THE ISLAND!!!!". Now I don't think he was getting paid to say this, I just think he really enjoyed the place. After my wife, her family, and I ate our food, we wanted to shout right a long with him. Fast forward to the present and we have eaten here every year since when we come to the island. Stu's has 22 different types of subs listed on their menu along with salads and soups. On our most recent trip in May I had the meatball sub aptly named Leddy's Schweddy Balls. AMAZING. Beats subway's meatball marinara by a long shot. Speaking of Subway, I would choose Stu's over Subway or Jimmy Johns any day. I only wish this place was where I live. What I believe to be the standout for Stu's is the homemade bread. It makes every sandwich stand out. The other people in my party ordered the "Local". It has turkey, cheese, honey mustard sauce, and topped with granny smith apples. It is my wife's favorite and she gets it every year. Stu's Surf Side has very limited seating inside as it is somewhat small. There are tables and chairs set up outside complete with shade umbrellas in case it is a hot, sunny day. Everyone that we have ever dealt with here has been very nice as you can see from the other reviews on Yelp. I can't wait to go back!

Food was really good, but it was the service that set them apart. Wife and I came in for lunch, with two kids in tow (6 and 1-1/2). Our little one only had a 15 minute nap, so was hungry and tired. We contemplated not eating out, but decided to play with fire. We came is as someone was leaving (interior is small) so we grabbed a table and looked over the menu. Lady came over (assume owner's wife maybe), to take our order. We asked if they by chance had a highchair for the little one. She said no, but then went to another restaurant nearby to borrow theirs... She went to another restaurant to get a high chair people. Who does that?!?! As the sandwiches were being made the little one started getting vocal about the lack of nap. Within less than a minute, the owner came over and asked if some goldfish would help tide her over. Seriously?!?! These people went WAY above and beyond good service. There were extraordinary, and I cannot say enough good things about them. You can see by all the other reviews that the food is good. Really good. It is the level of caring and service of those there, that truly make the difference.

BEST SUBS ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND! We walked by Stu's last night on our way to the booze station and almost stopped in our tracks and had a post dinner snack. My beer gut got the better of me and mandated we continue on to the liquor store but my other gut made a mental note of Stu's. Two disappointing meals later my belly biked over and ordered the #12 Beach Club and the #20 Sweet Mesquite. 5 minutes later I subgasmed all over the table and 10 minutes after that I was passed out on the beach. Do you and your fat self a favor and eat at Stu's! PS: Owners were really nice! Always a plus.

  • Jeff M.

Stu's was the perfect lunch spot. Sandwiches are big and the half sandwich is good for most. Had the schweddy balls and very happy! We sat inside but outside seating was available. Service was friendly and kept our drinks full.

  • Thomas T.

Sandwiches are a step or two above a Subway sandwich and I'm using Subway for reference, I haven't eaten at Subway in 10 years, but I assume much hasn't changed. Considering the prices for their sandwiches, Stu's provides a nice portion for the price. I wish the sandwiches weren't so bready - would've preferred a nice balance between bread and it's contents. I wasn't a fan of the potato salad - it was very salty and just, not good. All in all, would come again if I was in a pinch and all surrounding better places were closing for their after lunch and before dinner time, but next time I will probably just plan ahead and go elsewhere.

I had a lot of great food on this trip to HHI but Stu's stands out as the one place I absolutely without a doubt would make sure to return to again. The Jedi sub sandwich was so good I'll never taste a better sub unless I make it back down to Hilton Head. Had a short wait while fresh bread baked but it was beyond worth it and the guy behind the counter kept us entertained with his antics and drawing. Thanks for a great dinner Stu's!

  • Greg P.

Awesome sub shop. I was here over the weekend with my kids while at HHI and thought we would try it out. No regrets, the bread is fresh and this sure beats the heck out of a local Subway. Try this place, you will love it.

  • Rania Y.

So this is a local dive! But a great one. Most bad reviews are complaining about service but ours was great. Of course it wasn't during the lunch rush but the place was full. We were greeted and tended to right away. After we ordered it took only 10 minutes for all our orders and we were a party of 6. Now the food was great! I got "the hot chic" 1/2 sandwich and gumbo soup. And they were incredible. The bread was fresh and warm and the grilled chicken was still juicy and tasty. The gumbo had a little kick but it was really good too... I don't think you could go wrong with any sub here!

  • Anna N.

I got #1, and it was great. This is not your normal Subway. Tastey sandwiches. Nice staff. I waited 30 + min because they ran out of bread, and they made fresh bread. The inside is tiny, but there are tables outside to eat. Firehouse subs has a contender.

  • Justin U.

This place is fantastic. If feels like a little slice of California. They had at the door when I heard Sublime and Dirty Heads. Came here on vacation for So Cal. The sandwich was fantastic! The bread is unlike any other have had before. Super soft and yeasty. Definitely recommend and will probably go back again before our flight back home to California!

  • C.J. B.

One of my favorite places on the island. I'm really the only sub enthusiast in my family so I'm often in here alone. My go-to is the Harbour Town Classic. The bread is outstanding. The guys working are always friendly and willing to talk about pretty much anything. Fair prices, too. Definitely stop in for a great bite to eat and a friendly atmosphere.

    (5)
  • Michael R.

Really awesome subs. Truly. But their service is pathetic. They're friendly and helpful but I ordered a half sandwich, not even a full one, and I sat there for 45 minutes waiting. It's a half sub with cold cuts? That shouldn't take more that 5 mins to make. I was also in the place and ordered my food but 4 people who showed up after me got theirs first? And the place wasn't even busy. Sometimes simple lack of organization and haste can really screw up good food.

  • Lindsay N.

Delicious subs, lots of options of hot and cold subs, beer options, and top notch service!

  • M O.

Got 6 subs for the family. We got the chicken salad, Italian, roast beef, the Paulie, Asian, and kids turkey. Everyone loved their subs. Roast beef was lean and rare. Particular shout out. I was a bit disappointed in the Asian chicken. It was mostly in the middle of the bread and both sides of sandwich were not even with ingredients. It was good. Just not a full sandwich like the others. More bread. That was the only disappointment. I'd go back. Try more sandwiches. Place has a good vibe. Staff was very nice and friendly.

  • Jordan S.

These subs/sandwiches were the ultimate car lunch during a 12 hour drive back North and I can only say I wish tried them before my last day in Hilton Head. I never thought anyone would beat Jimmy John's bread but this place wins. Plus the amount of flavor they get into seemingly traditional sandwich meat is impressive.

  • Steve F.

Huge sandwiches with a large menu and very helpful and attentive staff. Not much seating inside but they have a lot of patio tables setup outside and the owner/manager brought our food out for us. Was a little hard to find as our GPS took us all over the place. But it's right next to the Piggly Wiggly.

  • Jb B.

Both my wife and I were extremely happy with the food. It was really busy, so it took a while, but overall it was really good. I recommend the "Asian persuasion".

  • Doug C.

Simple, casual, and very tasty. My wife and I ate lunch here one day after tooling around the island. The place itself is very divey, and was playing the soundtrack to my aggressive teenage years on the stereo (which was kind of awesome). We both got subs (duh). My wife got a sub that was basically an Italian sub (I can't remember which one), and I got a special that wasn't on the menu. Both were excellent - the bread was great, the meats and condiments were great, and the atmosphere gave us stuff to talk about our entire meal. All in all, I'd recommend here for a cheap beer and a good sub.

On the backside of Coligny Plaza, just around the corner from the Piggly Wiggly, sits a wonderful little sub shop called Stu's Surfside Subs. This tiny shop only has seating for about a dozen people on the inside, and there are also a few tables outside if the steamy weather doesn't get to you. I walked over to Stu's from our condo just south of Coligny Circle on our first day in town. I placed a carry out order for three sandwiches and waited ten or fifteen minutes for them to be prepared. Next time I think I'll order a beer to enjoy during the wait or call my order in ahead of time. I had a chicken salad sub with provolone, lettuce, and tomato ($6.50). Stu's bread is fresh-baked in the store and it shows, as the bread is soft, fluffy, and delicious! The chicken salad was good, but I was immediately jealous of my wife's beach club with peppered turkey, avocado, and cheese. We both liked the subs so much we returned on our final day at the beach and this time I went with the Calibogue (ham, turkey, bacon, and cheese with veggies) and it was easily the best of the bunch ($6.95). The Local with turkey, cheese, homemade honey mustard, and granny smith apples was also top-notch! Stu's is an amazing sub shop and I can't believe that a Subway remains in business in the same shopping center. I will definitely be back for more delicious subs in the future.

Subs were great! Bread was awesome! Staff was super friendly and helpful! You must go here if your craving a good sub!!! I recommend the Sweet Carolina or the Lifeguard!!

Been coming to HH for 25 years and this has become a must stop location for me and my brothers. The fresh bread and peppered bacon are to die for! Small location and long lines, but worth the wait every time! You'd be silly to not stop into Stu's at least once on your HH adventure.

Stu's was absolutely amazing. The subs were great. The staff was amazing and very helpful. We were very happy with everything here we ares definately going to come back here before we leave hilton head.

Delicious sandwiches. Yum! We brought our 8 month old in with us and they were so sweet to her! We got our sandwiches to go and she refilled my coke before I left. Amazing service! Went here twice on our vacation!

Best of the best. A great sandwich shop that we love. Don't miss this place if vacationing in Hilton Head.

  • Rob B.

Sub was ok, at least what came, but service was horrible. Forced to sit down instead of ordering at counter, and they forgot our order. More than 45 minutes for a sub, most of order did not even come.

  • Justin Y.

Great subs, reminds me of jimmy johns but with better bread! Easy lunch choice, close to the beach! Cheap and fast can not ask for more.

  • Melissa D.

We're greeted promptly when we arrived. The gentleman working even asked if he could get us cold beverages while we decided which subs to order. The service was well beyond what you would expect from a sub shop. My sandwich had a lot of meat and the bread was fresh. My husband got the chili with his sub. I was surprised this was great as well. The only reason I gave this place four stars was because while it was fabulous it was just a smidge below a NY deli. I've been going to this place over the years. I always look forward to coming back!

Stopped around 1:30 on a very hot Sunday afternoon. What a hopping place! Had a Combo which was a salad and 1/2 sub for $7.95. What a deal! Homemade bread and the food was delicious. Would definitely go back!

We were in HHI for the Beach Bum Tri. We arrived Friday evening and were looking for a sandwich place. The yelp reviews for Stu's looked good; so we tried them. The sandwiches were great. Friday night, I had a whole one and was quite satisfied. My wife at half of hers. Saturday, after the tri, we went back to pick up another sandwich for the ride home (my wife ate the leftover half from the night before). It was great as well. Stu's is a small sub shop. They seat six or so at the counter and another half dozen or so in other indoor seating. There are tables outside as well. It was a little crowded, but not in a bad way. The staff is friendly and helpful.

If you like a great sub with an awesome atmosphere this is the place to go. Very laid back and beachy feel. The sub bread is made fresh every day right on premise and is incredible. Jeff and his wife have an awesome business here, we will be sure to stop here again on our next visit.

Great food! Neat shop! Nice owner! Food is fantastic, the bread is especially delicious. A great experience. Ask around if you have a hard time finding it; it's worth it!

Best sandwich on the island. Always go for the #17 with a few dollar beer bongs. Nice people with great food. Has small seating room but also offer outdoor seating as well. Worked as a lifeguard on the beach and would always drive to Stu's every time I was in the area for lunch break.

Heard about Stu's from a front desk worker at the hotel we were staying out and so glad we listened to her and went to Stu's for a sandwich...it was really great...I think what stands out is the bread. They bake it every day and it is simply delicious....my daughter and I split a sandwich and we were stuffed afterwards...The owner Donna came up and asked how we were doing and she is just adorable...Jeff who may be her husband was friendly as well and gave me a bumper sticker to take home :) Then to top it off, got a cookie...just the way I like them...highly recommend you go to Stu's for a sandwich. You won't regret it.

Best food @ best value in Hilton Head! Fresh baked bread. Everyone ordered different subs, and everyone thought theirs was the best. Very busy lunchtime & reasonable wait time.

We noticed that this was the only sub shop that had any customers. Went back and was not disappointed.

    (5)
  • Lance H.

One of the best subs on the island. Sandwiches are huge. Great fresh-baked bread. The seating kind of sucks so order your sandwich to go. Perfect for the beach! Be sure to ask about the daily specials. My only knock on this place is their hours. Seems like every time I'm craving one of their sandwiches, they are closed :(

    (4)
  • Matt K.

Great subs!! Bread is fluffy on the inside. Reminds me of Hawaiian rolls. People there are friendly. It's the definition of a beach side sub shop.

    (5)
  • Mary H.

how is it possible that I haven't reviewed this great sandwich shop? Really fresh ingredients made into wonderful subs with homemade bread. Side are fresh and a great accompaniment to the subs. Service is fast and friendly. We've never eaten in. There are a few small tables, but we always do take out and take our subs to the beach. If you're looking for a great portable lunch, this is a don't miss.

    (5)
  • Adam G.

The service staff are extremely nice. A great little place to grab a sandy and have a seat outside with a cool drink. Appropriately priced with a great selection. If you want to get picky, they use a bit too much bread on the subs, but the bread is freshly baked and delicious. Would go back.

  • Chris D.

Wonderful sub shop right off the beach. Food was terrific and staff friendly and helpful. My wife and I had the islander and BLT. Kids had hot dogs. All really great.

    (5)
  • Tanya K.

Incredible subs! Stu's is literally our first stop as we get to the island every year!! Stu's then get to beach house. The bread is incredible. So soft and flavorful. The Jedi and BLT are personal faves. Always with extra mayo! This year I went with The Local...turkey, provolone, lettuce, tomato, honey mustard and granny smith apples. So good!! Stu's Surfside is a must for lunch.

This place is amazing. They bake their bread (slightly sweet) daily. Generous portions. I got the special of the day. It was a delicious Carolina pulled pork with Asian slaw sub. Great prices. Great service. Friendly staff and regular local customers. I wish I found it sooner. I will be back tomorrow.

    (5)
  • Michael S.

Although small (2 booths and a bar with about 5 seats) the place is great. The vibe is a surf shack, but its very bright and very clean. the staff was super friendly. We had a group of 6, all who ordered different things, and everyone thought it was top notch. Soft, fresh bread, stacks of meat, and great fresh veggies. Comes with a pickle and a choice of ms. vickers chips (regular, jalepeno, and bbq). great fast, clean eating. pleasant surprise while on vacation. if i got back to HH i am going tback to Stu's

Great place for a quick bite. Their subs are excellent. Large portions for a very reasonable price. Indoor seating is very limited, but on a nice day they have ample patio seating. Staff was very friendly and service was great. Highly recommended.

My wife and I really enjoyed the suns and the homemade bread makes their subs top notch !!!

    (5)
  • Marina R.

This is a perfectly acceptable sandwich place, but nothing to write home about. The sandwiches are only slightly better than those from a chain fast food place like Subway. Yes, they do bake their own bread, but the rolls are very generic and quickly become tastelessly soggy. The filling is fine. I was happy with my sweet Carolina chicken filling, but hubby was a bit disappointed in his pastrami sandwich, which had a very uninteresting, dull sauce. Overall - an OK meal, nothing completely wrong with it, but nothing wonderful either.

    (3)
  • Derek C.

I tried several different subs there and they were all awesome. But my favorite was the BLT sub. They do very good work there even though it's the size of a bathroom.

    (5)
  • Travis Z.

Place looked cool, too bad we didn't get to try it. After waiting in line for 10 minutes and finally getting to the front to place our order, the guy tells us they are out of bread and it will be at least at hour wait. Isn't this "fast food"? They seemed totally overwhelmed by the lunch time crowd and ill-prepared to handle it, even though they should have known it was spring break! Very disappointed as we were hungry and looking forward to a local joint. Not sure we will attempt it again while we are here for the week. There are lots of places on the island to try.

Delicious. Best subs ever. Friendly service.

  • Grace G.

The service wasn't great, but I think our waitress may have been new. All of the other staff seemed very friendly and attentive. The prices were reasonable and the sandwiches were delicious. We had a longer wait than most because they had run out of bread, but it was worth the wait because they bake their bread fresh and it's really what makes the sandwiches so great.

    (5)
  • Dylan A.

Well, I've read some really good reviews about this place, but this is not one of them. The only thing I can say in concurrence with the other reviews is that yes, the bread is baked fresh. This is great and all if you fancy your sandwich on a spongy, white sandwich roll. The roll itself was about 3/5 of my sandwich, which was turkey and roast beef. The meat was alright, nothing to write home about. Actually, I'm not sure I know what the meat and vegetables tasted like because all I could taste was bread. On the plus side, the service was good and I did enjoy the small shop ambience. For Hilton Head, this might be a good sandwich, but in general I just see it as one step up from Subway. It's better than being a step down, I guess.

    (2)
  • Ally G.

Best subs on the whole island. Their bread is fresh and homemade. Definitely what makes the sub stand out. My favorite is the Cheeta Slim. I can eat here everyday. It's just... perfect.

    (5)
  • Scott M.

Excellent service and the hot subs are awesome!!! The place is very small, but also has outdoor seating. The staff was great and the subs were honestly some of the best I've ever had. The bread is great too! If or when we head back to HHI, I'll be hitting Stu's up for sure!
